Advances In Gerontology
Clinical records from individuals followed for 5years, 2000 to 2005, were reviewed. They were distrib-uted in 3 cohorts of ages ranging from 51 to 60, 61to 70, and 71 to 80 years, respectively. Each cohort in-cluded 2 groups of patients with diabetes type 2, onegroup treated with Metformin 850 mg/day, and the otherone without pharmacological treatment. In all groups, for each individual, the mean variation of glycosylatedhemoglobin, ferritin, lymphocyte count, total and sub-populations, was determined in blood using the mea-surement at the beginning and at the end of the 5-yearfollow-up. The number of all living individuals andcancer cases were also recorded in all groups at theend of the 5-year period. The results were consistentwith the reported significance as biomarkers of agingof: the increase of glycosylated hemoglobin and fer-ritin, the decrease of the number of total lymphocytesandCD8+T, and the increase ofT-Regulators. In thispreliminary observation, the protection of Metforminon the variations of aging biomarkers was associatedwith survival and decline of malignancy incidence.
